I have been fascinated by movies and television shows ever since coming to America in 1979 from the Dominican Republic. My first language is Spanish. My Mother says that my siblings & I were "mute" when we first entered the American school system, refusing to speak from the culture shock. But at home, our glorious television was how I gradually learned English; soaking up the American culture that I deeply love today. My paintings are an ode to that - to a time when a little Girl who knew nothing about the new world around her, found a true depth of feeling and understanding through film and television. I paint scenes that give me an instant jolt of that original "feeling" of awe, wonder, and a giddy excitement.
I watch. I get the chills. I paint it.
